‘LOPEZ TONIGHT’ CANCELLED BY TBS

This just in: TBS has canceled Lopez Tonight, George Lopez‘s late-night talk show, after two seasons due to low ratings and high costs. The show’s last episode will air Thursday.

A former ABC sitcom star and stand-up comic, George never garnered big ratings, averaging less than a million viewers in his first season at 11 p.m. But when TBS hired Conan O’Brien last fall and pushed him an hour later, to midnight, his audience plummeted 40%, to 546,000 viewers this season. (Ironically, Conan left NBC when that network tried to do the same thing to him, by re-inserting Jay Leno at 11:30).

TBS will air reruns for the next few weeks, and will then substitute reruns of The Office.

Network spokeswoman Karen Cassell says they might add an original program “down the road,”but they have no current plans.

TBS says in a statement it was a “difficult decision.”
