In this just-released handout image provided by Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc., Zac Efron films a scene as the character U.S. Marine Sergeant Logan Thibault in the film The Lucky One on October 14 in an unspecified location.

Principle photography for the movie was slated to be shot in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The film depicts a Marine, played by Zac, home from the war in Iraq in a romantic drama based on Nicholas Sparks‘ bestselling novel The Lucky One.

In the photos, Zac seems to have packed on some more muscle to play the marine, and in one, appears to be crying while standing over a truck. We even catch a glimpse of his tribal tattoo that he’s been sporting for the role.

The film is being directed by Scott Hicks of No Reservations fame and is written by Remember Me scribes Doug McGrath and Will Fetters.

Zac Efron attended a charity premiere in Munich, Germany today (September 14) of his new flick Charlie St Cloud.

Upon his arrival, the newly bearded 22-year-old actor could be seen signing autographs and receiving various gifts, including a giant gingerbread cookie.

Meanwhile, Zac claims he was the “skinny, awkward kid” during his teenage years.

“I wasn’t a heartthrob at school, I was a geek,” he says. “I was a gawky 17 year-old. A lanky, skinny, awkward kid. My friends treat me the way they always did. If I was arrogant towards them they would kick my ass.”

Zac also admits he’s quite emotional.

“I cried at Toy Story 3,” he confesses. “It was embarrassing.”

A beareded Zac Efron attended the Spanish premiere of Charlie St Cloud (Siempre a mi Lado) at Capitol Cinema in Madrid today (September 13).

The former High School Musical has been busy traveling Europe promoting and premiering his failed foray into the world of serious acting.

Meanwhile, Zac says he wants to take greater control over own career and find new directors with his recently-founded production company.

He’s reportedly set to star in a remake of Swedish thriller Snabba Cash in one movie produced by his Ninjas Runnin’ Wild venture, which operates under Warner Bros.

When asked if he wanted a greater control over his own career, Zac told Wonderland: “Yeah absolutely, I’ve just started my own production company and something that I’m working on right now is finding cool young directors. There’s so much young talent our there and these guys aren’t afraid to try new things. The whole producing thing is very new to me but I find it fascinating. You know, finally things to develop and not just waiting for scripts to come in because they don’t.”

Asked if it was a ‘step too far’ for him to emulate the controversial roles portrayed by former young heartthrob Leonardo DiCaprio in films like The Basketball Diaries, Zac said: “It’s a different time right now. Not to blame it on that. Of course I’d love to go and do that kind of stuff, but it’s harder to get those things made now. It’s about finding those roles but I wouldn’t just do it, you know, I have to feel it in here [puts his fist to his chest]. Leo’s strengths are, I’d say, different. He carved out his own path and found those roles and they were all unique to him. I’m not gonna try to copy him, I’ve gotta find my own path, whatever that is. I don’t know what it is, I’m still exploring – just every day, figuring it out.”
